Rivers LG Polls: Caller Links Local Govt Politics to National Leadership Crisis

A caller on Nigeria Info’s Hello Port Harcourt says Nigeria's progress at the presidential level hinges on getting things right at the local government level.

He explained that if the character and competence of leaders aren't scrutinised at the grassroots, it will impact higher levels of government.

This caller criticised the selection process used by political parties to choose their candidates at the just concluded party primaries held over the weekend, ahead of the forthcoming Rivers local government elections. Sharing his observations from the exercise, he condemned the way political parties practice democracy, calling out their indifference to making real change in the country.

“They are just making a caricature of democracy,” he said.

Speaking further, he recounts knowing one of the candidates at the primaries, alleging that the individual has multiple criminal records. He also expressed disappointment over the waiver granted for tax clearance for candidates.
