Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the violent attack on several opposition political leaders in Benin City, Edo State, calling it “utterly condemnable and unacceptable in any democracy.”
The incident took place on 24th February 2026 after a political event hosted by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi, former national chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and other party leaders reportedly escaped a gunfire attack.
In a statement, Atiku said the attack was a dangerous sign for Nigeria’s politics.
He warned that “politics in Nigeria is taking a dangerous turn” and that violence has no place in a democratic society.
Atiku also said that recent “reckless and inflammatory rhetoric” — or strong words used by some political figures — may have helped create an environment that allows violence.
He said such language can “dangerously legitimise violence against political opponents.”
The former vice president called on President Bola Tinubu and Nigeria’s security leaders to protect all citizens, especially political figures, saying it is their duty under the constitution.
He added, “Nigeria must not descend into a theatre where politics is settled by violence.”
The attack has raised concern across the country as politicians work toward the 2027 general elections, with many calling for peace and respect for democratic rights.
