The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Sunday observed a nationwide “Black Sunday” to honor victims of insecurity, as a U.S. congressman renewed calls for international attention to violence affecting Christian communities in the country.

The twin developments came amid growing concern over killings, kidnappings and attacks across several parts of Nigeria.

CAN said the observance was meant to mourn victims and draw attention to what it described as the worsening security situation.

CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh said, “Our nation is bleeding, and the Church cannot remain silent.”

He called on governments at all levels to take “urgent, decisive and sustained measures” to protect lives and property.

The association said the day was dedicated to victims including men, women, children, clergy, farmers and students affected by violence across the country.

The group also linked security to national development and democracy, arguing that peace remains essential for economic growth and social stability.

Meanwhile, U.S. Congressman Riley Moore urged the international community not to ignore what he described as the persecution and killing of Christians in Nigeria.

Moore, who has previously visited Nigeria and met victims of attacks, said the issue should remain a priority for policymakers and human rights advocates.

His comments come as debate continues internationally over how to characterise violence in Nigeria.

While some American lawmakers and advocacy groups have described the attacks as a form of persecution against Christians, Nigerian officials and several international observers have argued that the country's security crisis is more complex, involving terrorism, banditry, communal conflicts and criminal violence that affect both Christians and Muslims.

The renewed attention comes as Nigeria grapples with persistent security challenges, including recent mass abductions and attacks in several states.

Lawmakers are currently advancing proposals for state police as part of broader efforts to improve security nationwide.

CAN said its message on Black Sunday was simple: the loss of innocent lives must not become normal, and authorities must act urgently to restore peace and security across the country.
