A fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran is under threat after U.S. forces seized an Iranian cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of renewed conflict.

According to Reuters, the ship was intercepted after it allegedly tried to break a U.S. naval blockade.

U.S. officials said the move was part of efforts to enforce sanctions and maintain pressure on Iran.

Iran strongly condemned the action, calling it “armed piracy” and warning of retaliation.

Officials in Tehran also rejected planned peace talks, saying conditions were “not conducive” due to continued U.S. pressure and military actions.

The two countries had agreed to a temporary ceasefire earlier in April, but tensions have remained high.

Iran has insisted that its “missile program and national defenses” are not open for negotiation, widening the gap between both sides.

The situation has also affected global markets.

Oil prices have risen sharply, with traders worried that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could cut off a major supply route.

The waterway carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil, making it critical to the global energy supply.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan appear to be stalling, as Iran has refused to attend scheduled talks.

Global leaders are urging restraint, but with rising military activity and strong warnings from both sides, the crisis is becoming more dangerous.
