Euracare Multispecialist Hospital on Sunday expressed sympathy to author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her family after the death of one of her twin sons and pushed back against what it called inaccurate reports about the child’s care.

In a written statement, the hospital said: “We extend our deepest sympathies to Chimamanda Adichie and family on the demise of their son” and called the loss “deeply distressing.”

The release added that “some of the reports currently being circulated contain inaccuracies.”

Adichie has publicly said her child, identified in family statements as Nkanu Nnamdi, died after an alleged overdose during preparation for an MRI and a central-line procedure.

The hospital said the boy “was critically ill” when referred to Euracare “for specific diagnostic procedures after receiving treatment for a period of time at two paediatric centres.”

Euracare said its team “immediately provided care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards, including the administration of sedation where clinically indicated.”

The statement added that, despite “concerted efforts, the patient sadly passed away less than 24 hours after presenting at our facility.”

The hospital said it has “commenced a detailed investigation consistent with our clinical governance standards and best practices” and that it remains “committed to engaging transparently and responsibly with all clinical and regulatory processes.”

It promised to “support [the family] in any way that may bring comfort.”

Euracare also asked the public to respect the family’s privacy while the medical review and any regulatory steps proceed.
