Guinea’s coup leader, Gen. Mamady Doumbouya, has won the presidential election held on 28 December, provisional results show, marking the end of four years of military transition.

The country’s election authority said Doumbouya secured 86.72% of the vote, with a reported 80.95% turnout from about 6.7 million registered voters.

His nearest rival, Yéro Baldé, trailed far behind, leaving Doumbouya with an absolute majority and no need for a second round.

Doumbouya first seized power in a 2021 coup.

He later sponsored a new constitution in a September referendum that lifted the ban on military officers running for president and extended the presidential term to seven years — reforms that cleared the path for his candidacy.

While the vote formally ends military rule, the process has drawn criticism.

The United Nations said the run-up to the election was “marked by intimidation” and urged authorities to ensure a free and safe voting environment.

In the months before the election, several opposition figures were barred, exiled, or sidelined, and more than 50 political parties were dissolved, leaving a weakened opposition field.

Doumbouya has won praise from some quarters for promoting major mining developments, including the Simandou iron-ore project, and for asserting state control over some mineral licences, moves he says will create jobs and boost revenue.
