Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing, has been killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City, according to a statement from Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz.
Katz, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), congratulated the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel’s security agency, Shin Bet, for what he described as a “flawless execution.”
Hamas has yet to confirm his death, but the group said earlier that dozens of civilians were killed or injured in Israeli airstrikes targeting a residential building in the area.
Local journalists reported at least seven deaths and 20 injuries in the densely populated al-Rimal neighbourhood, with children among the casualties.
Saturday’s attack comes as Israel intensifies airstrikes on Gaza City ahead of a planned ground offensive.
