The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has completed an internal timetable to prepare for the 2027 general election but will not publish an official schedule until legal and parliamentary issues are settled.

INEC told civil society groups it has “finished” a preparatory timetable that lays out logistics, voter registration, training and other tasks.

The commission’s chairman acknowledged that some items in the plan “may be affected by how quickly lawmakers conclude the amendment process.”

The commission, however, has repeatedly denied that it has released a public timetable.

In an earlier statement, INEC said reports claiming it had published a timetable were “false and misleading” and reminded Nigerians that, under the Electoral Act, it must publish a formal notice not later than 360 days before a general election.

Civil society groups warned that delays in passing proposed changes to the Electoral Act could squeeze the time available for parties, candidates and election officials — and could increase the risk of confusion and legal challenges if rules change late in the process.

They also state that a final law passed too late would make it harder for INEC to issue a public timetable without breaching legal deadlines.

INEC officials say they are preparing along two tracks: an internal operational calendar to guide planning, and a separate public timetable that will be published only when legal and political conditions allow.

The commission urged Nigerians to rely on its official channels for confirmed information.
