The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, in his 2026 Easter message, has called on Nigerians to trust God and remain hopeful despite rising insecurity and economic hardship in the country.

In the message, Martins said the celebration comes at a time of “significant national challenges,” including “harsh economic realities” and “persistent threats to our security.”

He urged Christians not to lose faith, saying, “Do not let the weight of these challenges erode your faith,” and reminded them that the resurrection shows “God is sovereign over every force of darkness.”

The archbishop also condemned recent killings, including an attack in Jos that left more than 27 people dead, describing it as a “dastardly act” carried out on a sacred day.

He criticised the government, saying it has “failed woefully to put an end to the lingering cases of insecurity,” despite repeated promises to Nigerians.

Martins called on leaders to “prioritise human lives over politics” and warned that continued violence and hardship should not be treated as political issues.

He added that leaders must show “sacrificial leadership” and improve citizens’ welfare, saying those who cannot deliver should “be bold enough to resign.”

Looking ahead to future elections, he urged Nigerians to choose leaders who will serve with “honesty” and “fear of God.”

Despite the challenges, Martins encouraged unity, urging citizens to “be agents of reconciliation and peace” and not give in to despair.
