A speeding tanker truck slammed into a Toyota Corolla at the Apakun Bridge corridor in Lagos on Monday, injuring the car’s driver and two pedestrians, Lagos State officials confirmed.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary investigations revealed that the tanker was traveling at an “outrageously excessive and perilous speed,” which caused a violent collision that blocked traffic and endangered lives.

The Toyota Corolla, bearing plate EKY 289 HM, was heavily damaged, and its driver was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Honorable Sola Giwa, senior aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside LASTMA officials, commended the swift response from rescue teams.

LASTMA, Ajao Estate police, the Rapid Response Squad, and Lagos State Fire and Rescue coordinated efforts at the scene, mindful that the tanker was carrying gas, which posed additional risks.

Victims were promptly extracted from the wreckage and taken for urgent medical care.

A LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, condemned the truck driver’s actions as “egregiously irresponsible, dangerously negligent, and wholly antithetical to the Lagos State Government’s aspiration of fostering a safe, orderly, and efficiently regulated transportation ecosystem.”

Hon. Giwa issued a stern warning, stating, “The government will not hesitate to unleash the full weight of the law on any individual found culpable of endangering human lives through reckless or unlawful driving practices.”

LASTMA urged all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and speed limits.

“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reiterates its call for heightened collective responsibility on the highways,” the agency said, urging residents to report reckless drivers immediately.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing as authorities emphasize the need for heightened caution, especially around bridges and busy corridors.
