The Lagos State Government has directed residents to remain indoors on Saturday morning for the monthly environmental sanitation exercise aimed at improving cleanliness and reducing flooding across the state.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the exercise will hold between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on the last Saturday of the month.

Residents are expected to clean their surroundings and clear drainage channels before resuming normal activities.

Wahab said the exercise forms part of efforts by the state government to revive environmental sanitation culture after nearly a decade-long suspension.

“Every resident is expected to clean his environment and clear the drains in front of his or her tenements,” the commissioner said.

He added that the Lagos Waste Management Authority and local councils had deployed evacuation trucks and compactors across the state to remove waste generated during the exercise.

According to the government, environmental health officers and enforcement officials will monitor compliance in various communities, while violators risk sanctions under the Lagos State Environmental Management Law of 2017.

The monthly sanitation exercise was officially reintroduced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in March as part of broader environmental and flood-control measures in the state.

Major transport unions have also pledged support by restricting vehicle operations from parks and garages during the exercise period, officials said.

While many residents welcomed the return of the sanitation programme, some Lagosians had earlier raised concerns over alleged harassment and movement restrictions during previous exercises.
