A socio-political group from Nigeria’s Middle Belt region has called on former president Goodluck Jonathan to return to active politics and contest the 2027 presidential election.
The group said Jonathan’s experience and leadership style could help address the country’s current challenges.
The group said the former leader still has strong support in many parts of the country and could provide the kind of leadership Nigeria needs at this time.
According to the group, Jonathan’s record in office and his democratic approach make him a strong candidate if he decides to run again.
“Jonathan remains a seasoned political leader,” the group said, adding that his leadership qualities and experience could help guide Nigeria through difficult economic and political times.
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 after the death of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.
He later lost the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari. His decision to accept defeat peacefully was widely praised in Nigeria and abroad.
The Middle Belt group said the country is facing serious economic and security challenges and needs leaders with experience.
They argued that Jonathan’s leadership style and his role in strengthening democratic institutions during his time in office still resonate with many Nigerians.
In recent months, several other advocacy groups and political movements have also urged Jonathan to consider returning to politics ahead of the 2027 election.
However, the former president has not publicly declared whether he plans to run for office again.
Political analysts say discussions about potential candidates for the 2027 election are likely to increase as Nigeria’s political parties begin early preparations for the vote.
