The National President of the Middle Belt Forum, Dr Bitrus Pogu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action to stop the ongoing killings in parts of northern Nigeria.
Pogu spoke ahead of a stakeholders’ meeting with the president following recent attacks in Angwan Rukuba in Plateau State.
He said the government must fulfil its “constitutional responsibility” to protect lives and ensure the welfare of citizens.
According to him, many communities have suffered repeated attacks, with little response from authorities.
“People… come in and kill without provocation, and then disappear… and nothing happens,” Pogu said.
He also questioned comments by some officials who described attackers as “brothers,” saying such views are unacceptable.
Pogu added that several attacks go unreported, including incidents in nearby communities where lives were lost.
He said victims are often displaced and forced into camps, while attackers move freely.
As a solution, he called for the creation of state and community policing to allow locals to defend themselves.
He also alleged that security agents sometimes prevent communities from resisting attacks.
“If government doesn’t do what is necessary… we will not stand back,” he warned.
The renewed calls come as concerns grow over rising insecurity in the region and the need for stronger protection of vulnerable communities.
