The Federal Government has warned Nigerian citizens living in or travelling to the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries to be extra careful because of rising military tensions in the Middle East.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said it is “closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation” after reported military action by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran” and reported retaliatory strikes by Iran in some Gulf states.

The advisory urged Nigerians in the affected areas to remain extremely vigilant and avoid “areas known to be strategic, military, or government installations, as these could be potential flashpoints.”

It also recommended restricting “non-essential movement and travel” and avoiding large gatherings or public demonstrations until the situation becomes safer.

The government advised citizens to strictly comply with security and safety instructions issued by local authorities to help ensure their personal safety.

It said cooperation with local law enforcement is very important during uncertain times.

The advisory also noted that Nigerian diplomatic missions — including the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and consular offices in Gulf countries such as Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia — are on high alert to assist Nigerians and help with communication as needed.

The government said it will continue to assess the situation and provide updates.

It added that “the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government” and appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to reduce tensions and return to negotiation for global peace.

The advisory follows reports of airstrikes and retaliatory missile launches across the region, which have increased risks to residents and foreign nationals.
