Security operatives have arrested four suspected bandits near Akure Airport after a joint operation involving aviation security personnel, the military and other local security agencies.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on 15th March 2026 by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.
According to FAAN, “four suspected bandits were… apprehended within the vicinity of Akure Airport, Ondo State, following a coordinated security operation involving aviation and local security agencies.”
The authority said the arrests followed a distress alert that suspicious individuals had been spotted behind the airport fence near the Eleyewo community.
Security personnel from FAAN’s Aviation Security unit, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force immediately launched a joint search operation.
“During the operation, some individuals were seen attempting to flee the area,” FAAN said, adding that “four suspects were eventually apprehended by the joint security team and have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation.”
Reports say the alarm was raised after farmers working near the airport ran toward the runway for safety after sighting armed men on motorcycles.
Air traffic controllers noticed the unusual movement and alerted security personnel, leading to the operation that resulted in the arrests.
FAAN praised the cooperation among security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps and local vigilantes, saying their joint efforts made the arrests possible.
The agency added that the incident shows the need to strengthen airport perimeter security.
It said the federal government is accelerating the installation of modern fencing and improved security systems at airports across the country to prevent unlawful access.
