A federal high court in Abuja on Wednesday adjourned the hearing in a ₦1.2 billion suit by activist Omoyele Sowore against the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation until 10th March.
Justice Mohammed Garba Umar fixed the date after the defendants — including IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force and the FCT Commissioner of Police — failed to appear in court and were not represented by lawyers, the Independent reported.
The judge said fresh hearing notices must be served and warned that the next date would be a “definite hearing.”
Sowore, who was in court with supporters and represented by lawyer Abubakar Marshall, filed the suit after his arrest and detention on 23rd October 2025, linked to the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.
He told the court his arrest, detention and arraignment were “illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.”
The activist is asking the court to declare the arrests a breach of his fundamental rights and to award ₦200 million in general damages and ₦1 billion in punitive damages.
He also wants the police to publish an apology in three national papers and asked the AGF to begin disciplinary proceedings under the Anti-Torture Act.
