The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration And Control (NAFDAC), Prof Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, has announced that regulatory approval has been granted  for the R21/Matrix vaccine developed by scientists at Oxford University.

Prof  Adeyeye made this announcement at a press briefing to hint Nigerians on the regulatory approval of R21 malaria vaccine by NAFDAC on Monday in Abuja.

The vaccine is intended to prevent malaria in children between the ages of five and 36 months, with Nigeria having the highest prevalence of malaria in the world and the highest number of global malaria deaths.

She stated that the vaccine had undergone a full review using the standards set by the World Health Organisation to ensure its efficacy, safety, and quality.

This development comes after Ghana became the first country to approve the vaccine, which has been reported to be 80% effective.
