The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has demanded the immediate unionization of its members at Mamuda Group, alleging widespread workers’ rights violations.
According to TUC, “90 per cent of the company’s staff are employed as casual workers.”
Speaking to journalists shortly after picketing the company at Challawa, the Union said the workforce at Mamuda Group is denied basic labour rights, including job security, fair wages, and safe working conditions.
TUC Secretary-General, Comrade Nuhu Toro, argues that “the lack of formal employment contracts has left workers vulnerable and unable to voice grievances through proper channels.”
Comrade Toro laments that despite reaching out to the group for over 3 years, the group has yet to unionize its workforce.
This is unacceptable. Their rights are being trampled, and we are demanding that they be allowed to unionize without intimidation.”
Also speaking, the Chairman of TUC in Kano, Mubarak Buba Yarima, once unionize, the workers will have better working conditions, fair wages, and structured dialogue with management.
Comrade Yarima “cited national labour laws that protect workers’ rights to freely associate and organize.”
In response to the growing pressure, Mamuda Group’s management has acknowledged the union’s request and agreed to consult its board of directors on the matter of union recognition and employee representation.
TUC and Mamuda Group agreed to meet on Thursday to finalize the agreement.
Mamuda Group is a major player in the Nigerian manufacturing and distribution sectors.
The company’s next steps following its internal consultation will be closely watched by both labor advocates and industry observers.
