The United Kingdom has begun enforcing its policy prohibiting international students from bringing dependents through the study visa route.

In a post on X, the UK Home Office emphasized that only postgraduate research or government-sponsored scholarship students would be exempt from the prohibition.

"We are fully committed to achieving a significant reduction in migration. As of today, newly arriving international students will no longer have the option to bring family members to the UK, except for postgraduate research or government-funded scholarship students who will be exempt,” the Home Office stated.

In May 2023, the kingdom enacted a law to prevent Nigerian students and others studying in the UK from bringing family as dependents, with specific circumstances as exceptions.

This move aligns with the UK government's objective to decrease immigration, currently standing at about one million.

Under the new regulation, international students will no longer be allowed to switch from the student route to work routes, before completing their studies.
