The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has invalidated the registration of over one million voters in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise nationwide.

The chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this at a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja.

The registrations were invalid because the applicants flouted the guidelines stipulated for the exercise.

106,270 applications were invalidated in Osun and Ekiti States where governorship elections will take place later this year.

They consist of 17,640 registrants in Ekiti State and 88,630 in Osun.

Prof. Yakubu expressed delight at the number of new registrants.

“The number of new registrants is very impressive and demonstrates the eagerness of Nigerians to vote in the forthcoming elections,” he said.

The INEC chairman said the commission was investigating alleged infractions by some of its personnel, and also appealed to Nigerians to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before the June 30, 2022 deadline.
