The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects over the alleged mob killing of Basit Kolade following a road incident on Freeman Street, Lagos Island.
The incident happened at about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, 2nd September 2026, police said in a statement Monday.
According to police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi, Kolade was traveling with his spouse from Ebute Metta toward Lagos Island in a black Lexus Jeep when a motorcycle allegedly collided with the vehicle from behind.
“An argument reportedly ensued between both of them,” Adebisi said.
She added that “the vehicle allegedly reversed and hit the motorcycle, causing the rider and the motorcycle to fall.”
The incident then attracted a group of people who allegedly attacked Kolade with dangerous weapons.
His spouse was rescued by some women in the area, while Kolade was taken to Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The motorcycle rider survived and is receiving treatment at a hospital.
The four suspects arrested were identified as Khalid Rafiq, 20; Gafar Rahim, 21; Ibrahim Azeez, 33; and Samos Momoh, 21.
Police said efforts were continuing to identify and arrest others involved in the attack.
The case has been classified as homicide and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigation.
The command warned residents against mob action and jungle justice.
“No individual or group has the legal authority to arrest, try, convict, or execute another person,” the police said.
Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai directed that anyone found culpable be arrested and prosecuted, assuring the public that the investigation would be “thorough and professional.”
This arrest comes after the order issued by the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to his officers to treat mob action and jungle justice as crimes punishable by jail time and death.
