Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over a suspicious payment made into one of his private bank accounts, alleging that his confidential banking details may have been compromised.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, disclosed this in a statement Friday signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.
According to the statement, the former vice president received a transfer from an unidentified individual with the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
It said neither Atiku nor his campaign team authorised, solicited or had prior knowledge of the payment or the person behind the transaction.
The statement described the development as troubling, noting that the account was a private account whose details were not publicly available.
Atiku questioned how unknown individuals obtained his banking information, warning that any unauthorised access to private financial records could threaten the privacy and security of Nigerians.
“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” he said.
The former vice president also expressed concern that the information may have been obtained through people with privileged access.
He said security agencies and members of the public had been notified of the incident, which he described as part of a series of suspicious activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he called attempts to damage his reputation, insisting that he remained focused on offering leadership and solutions to the country’s challenges.
