The presidency has assured that victory against the terrorists operating within Nigeria is “within sight.”
This is contained in President Muhammadu Buhari’s Eid al-Fitr message to the country.
In the document signed by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, President Buhari listed reasons why Nigerians “have cause to welcome the occasion in hope.”
They include progress in the war on terror in the North East.
“Last month, the leader of ISWAP was killed in an airstrike. Since the New Year, thousands of fighters have surrendered to enter rehabilitation programmes.
“The territories they used to occupy are now seeing the return of those who were forced to flee their barbarity,” the statement read.
Military Taking on Insecurity in the North West, North Central, South-South and South East
The president also stated that the military is tackling kidnappings and banditry in the North West and North Central, curbing crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering in the South-South, and overrunning the operational bases of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the South East.
In addition, the statement pointed to the president’s approval of the establishment of a Naval Base in Oguta, Imo State.
It also mentioned the arrest of more than 12,000 drug traffickers and abusers, and the rehabilitation of 8,000 others.
