Chelsea Football Club has confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the new manager of their men’s team, marking the beginning of a new era at Stamford Bridge.

The Premier League club announced on Sunday that the Spaniard has signed a four-year contract and will officially take charge on July 1.

In a statement, Chelsea Football Club described Alonso as “one of the most respected figures in the modern game,” citing his coaching quality, leadership attributes, and experience as key factors behind the decision.

Alonso arrives after a successful spell in Germany, where he led Bayer Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title and guided the club to a UEFA Europa League final, further strengthening his reputation as one of Europe’s most highly rated young coaches.

Speaking following his appointment, Alonso expressed pride at taking over at Stamford Bridge.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” he said.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

The former Spain international also pointed to the quality within the squad, emphasising the need to build the right culture.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies,” he added.

Alonso enjoyed a decorated playing career, winning major honours including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League, and is widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.

Chelsea say the appointment reflects the club’s long-term vision to return to sustained success, with Alonso set to lead the next phase of the project when he officially assumes duties in July.
