The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre after dismissing his application seeking the recusal of the trial judge.

Justice Mohammed Umar, in a ruling on Monday, held that there was no basis for him to withdraw from the case and subsequently ordered Sowore’s remand pending the hearing of a motion for stay of execution of an earlier order revoking his bail.

Sowore, a presidential candidate of the African Action Congress and publisher of Sahara Reporters, is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services on charges bordering on criminal defamation and alleged cybercrime.

The case stems from social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”

The court adjourned the matter to June 24, 2026, for hearing of the stay application filed by his counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN.

Sowore was previously remanded after the court revoked his bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest over his failure to appear in court.

The case continues to draw public attention amid wider debates on freedom of expression and political speech in Nigeria.
