The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors General of Police to Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The move takes effect from June 15 and is aimed at improving security coordination and faster response to emerging threats.

According to the police, the deployment will bring senior leadership closer to the field, strengthen supervision and improve accountability across commands.

The DIGs are expected to work closely with Assistant Inspectors General and Commissioners of Police to enhance operational effectiveness nationwide.

The IGP has also directed all state police commissioners to begin coordinated inter state security operations known as "Handshake Patrols."

The initiative is designed to boost intelligence sharing, improve communication among commands and strengthen joint responses to crimes that cut across state borders.

Disu said criminals often take advantage of jurisdictional gaps by committing offences in one state and fleeing to another.

He therefore urged police commands to work more closely with neighbouring states through coordinated patrols and intelligence driven operations.

The police say the measures are part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety and better protect lives and property across the country.
