INEC Procures 57,000 BVAS Devices, Warns Against Attacks on Electoral Staff

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has procured 57,000 additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a meeting with commission staff in Gombe, saying the devices will improve voter verification, battery life and data transmission.

He added that the commission is strengthening its electronic result management systems to improve transparency and accountability.

Amupitan warned that technology alone cannot guarantee credible elections without strict compliance with electoral laws and procedures.

He also disclosed that security agencies had uncovered an alleged plot by criminal kingpins to attack ad hoc electoral staff and National Youth Service Corps members.

According to him, the threat was neutralised, while the principal suspects were arrested and are facing prosecution.

The INEC chairman said the commission is working with the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Services and the military to prevent electoral violence.

He added that INEC is moving towards intelligence-led security operations to identify threats before election day.

The commission will also hold a national election security conference in Abuja to finalise security plans for areas considered vulnerable to violence.
