Traffic on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is moving slowly around the Kara Bridge and OPIC turning, although a backlog of vehicles continues to stretch beyond the Long Bridge, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said in an update on Tuesday.
The update follows a multiple-vehicle crash at Kara Bridge that caused more than 14 hours of gridlock and compounded ongoing repair works on the bridge.
LASTMA said traffic was moving slowly from Otedola Bridge inbound toward Berger and Kara, down to the OPIC turning. It added that vehicles travelling inward from the OPIC turning were also moving gradually, with the congestion extending beyond the Long Bridge.
LASTMA personnel have been deployed to the OPIC turning to manage the situation and facilitate the movement of vehicles.
The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, involved seven vehicles, including a 40-foot container truck, a Toyota Hilux, an interstate bus, a Hyundai Odyssey, a Sienna, a Toyota Highlander and a Mitsubishi Hilux.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said the container truck developed a mechanical fault while in motion, causing its driver to lose control and collide with the other six vehicles.
LASEMA said its response team arrived at the scene at 6:05 a.m. and coordinated recovery efforts with LASTMA and the Nigeria Police Force. All the affected vehicles were eventually removed from the carriageway, and no deaths or injuries were recorded, according to the agency.
The crash initially disrupted traffic heading toward Ogun State before the resulting congestion spread toward Lagos. Motorists driving against traffic to escape the gridlock subsequently created additional obstruction around the OPIC section.
The incident occurred amid repair works on the Kara Bridge, which have reduced available road space and contributed to recurring congestion along the expressway.
