The Lagos State Government has begun plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities as part of efforts to improve accessibility, recognition and ease of mobility across the state.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored collaboration on developing and implementing the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.
Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, says the initiative supports Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's vision of building a more inclusive Lagos and will improve recognition and movement for persons with disabilities across the state.
He adds that the agency has already opened discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps and will begin the necessary administrative processes while working closely with LASODA to ensure the successful rollout of the special number plates.
LASODA General Manager, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, says the initiative is intended to benefit all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers, adding that it will strengthen identification, accessibility and support for the disability community.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the initiative, describing it as another step towards promoting inclusion, protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and ensuring equal opportunities across Lagos State.
