The National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking the establishment of state police services to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, said the bill was transmitted on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, with the expectation that the state legislatures would consider it within one month.
Although the Constitution does not prescribe a timeframe for state assemblies to respond, Ogunlana said the National Assembly expects them to communicate their resolutions within 30 days of receiving the bill.
He clarified, however, that the 30-day period is an administrative timeframe and not a constitutional deadline.
The National Assembly said it recognises the constitutional responsibility and independence of the State Houses of Assembly in considering the proposed amendments.
Under the Constitution, a bill seeking to alter the Constitution must receive the approval of at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before the process can be concluded.
The State Police Bill was passed weeks ago by both chambers of the National Assembly, marking a key step in efforts to address the country’s security challenges.
The National Assembly said it would proceed with the next steps after receiving the resolutions of the State Assemblies, while reaffirming its commitment to due process, institutional cooperation and compliance with the Constitution.
