The Nigeria Democratic Congress has condemned an alleged attack on its members during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, describing the incident as an attack on democratic participation.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party accused unnamed “state-sponsored thugs” of disrupting the meeting and urged security agencies to investigate the incident and prosecute those responsible.
The NDC said political parties have a constitutional right to organise peaceful meetings, adding that intimidation would not stop its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
“No amount of intimidation will silence this constitutionally guaranteed right,” the party said.
The party also criticised security agencies for what it described as a failure to respond promptly to attacks on opposition members in Enugu and other parts of the Southeast.
It alleged that its members had previously been attacked twice in Imo State during a town hall meeting and consultation involving its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha.
The NDC accused the ruling All Progressives Congress in Enugu of being concerned about the party’s growing support, but did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim.
The party said the latest incident would not deter its mobilisation efforts.
“If the goal ... is to instill fear in the hearts of the people, they have failed woefully,” the statement said.
The NDC called for an immediate and thorough investigation, saying those responsible and their alleged sponsors should be brought to justice.
