Burkina Faso and Mali have issued a warning against any attempt to restore the ousted Nigerien president, Mohamed Bazoum, to power.

They gave this warning in a joint statement on Monday after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) threatened to use force to reinstate the deposed president.

They stated that any intervention to restore the deposed government would be considered a declaration of war against them.

Burkina Faso and Mali are under military regimes after separate coups took place in the two countries in September 2022 and May 2021 respectively.

While Burkina Faso is under the leadership of 34-year-old Captain Ibrahim Traore, Mali is ruled by Colonel Assimi Goita, and both countries have been suspended from ECOWAS.

ECOWAS has imposed sanctions including the suspension of financial transactions between its member states and Niger, and the freezing of national assets.
