The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has redeployed Commandant Abdulhamid Kabara as the new State Commandant of its Niger State Command.

Kabara has officially assumed duty and taken over the leadership of the Command from the suspended Commandant, Suberu Aniviye.

The Corps’ spokesman, Deputy Superintendent Abubakar Rabiu Muti, said in a statement that the new commandant’s assumption of office comes at a particularly sensitive period for the Command.

The development follows the deaths of 37 persons arrested in connection with suspected illegal mining activities in the state.

Kabara expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and extended his sympathy to the families of the deceased and others affected by the incident.

He said the NSCDC remains committed to its statutory responsibilities, including arrest, investigation, enforcement and the fight against illegal mining, but stressed that the sanctity of human life must remain paramount.

According to him, law enforcement responsibilities must go hand in hand with the protection of the dignity, safety and welfare of persons in custody.

Kabara added that the Corps would continue to discharge its duties while ensuring that the protection of human life remains a fundamental consideration in its operations.
