The Federal Government has approved new measures to accelerate the provision of reliable electricity to health facilities across Nigeria as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
The decisions were reached at the third meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee on the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative, jointly chaired by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, and the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe.
The committee approved plans to establish a dedicated programme unit within the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to coordinate implementation of the initiative. The proposal will be presented to the National Council on Health for consideration.
It also endorsed continued engagement with eight energy solution providers and the development of selected health institutions as energy hubs to speed up the deployment of reliable electricity to federal tertiary hospitals.
Speaking after the meeting, Salako said the government is strengthening governance and partnerships to expand healthcare electrification nationwide.
He said interventions by the Rural Electrification Agency have already provided reliable electricity to about 100 hospitals, while development partners are supporting similar efforts, particularly at the primary healthcare level.
Salako reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu's target of ensuring that at least 30% of health facilities nationwide have access to reliable 24-hour electricity by the end of 2027.
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom, said sustained collaboration among government agencies and development partners will be critical to ensuring reliable electricity becomes a standard feature of healthcare delivery across the country.
The Nigeria Power for Health Initiative, established in 2025, is a joint programme of the Federal Ministries of Health and Power aimed at improving healthcare services through expanded access to dependable electricity.
