The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to retire before the 2027 general election, arguing that Nigeria needs a more energetic and capable leader to confront the country's economic and security challenges.
Speaking on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, Obi said the current administration has failed to provide the leadership needed to tackle rising poverty, hunger, insecurity and other national challenges.
He claimed Tinubu no longer possesses the capacity required to govern effectively, adding that there is a clear difference between his performance as governor of Lagos State and as president.
"The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one that is president today, he's tired, he should be allowed to retire in peace and then go home," Obi said.
He also argued that Nigeria was heading in the wrong direction under the current administration and called for a change in leadership.
Obi urged Nigerians to focus less on political calculations and more on addressing pressing national issues, warning that poverty and food insecurity could worsen if urgent action is not taken.
Reacting to comments by United States President Donald Trump commending Tinubu's efforts to improve security, Obi welcomed the praise but maintained that the government's response remains insufficient.
"Thank you to President Trump. But we need to do more. His best is not enough, we need to do far more than what we are doing," he said.
