The Osun State Government says it will approach the Federal High Court to challenge the decision by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to freeze its accounts.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, says Governor Ademola Adeleke has given him the mandate to sue the anti-graft agency, arguing that the EFCC acted outside its powers by placing a “Post No Debit” restriction on the accounts.
Jimi-Bada says while the EFCC has the authority to investigate government accounts, it cannot freeze them without obtaining a court order, adding that the action could disrupt government operations in the state.
The Commissioner for Finance, Sola Ogungbile, also alleged that police operatives visited the main branch of First Bank in Osogbo and arrested some bank officials in connection with the development.
The state government maintains that Adeleke is not using public funds to finance his re-election campaign and warns that freezing the accounts could affect the welfare of residents and the delivery of government services.
Earlier, Governor Adeleke had accused the EFCC of planning to freeze the accounts of the state government and some top officials, describing the alleged move as an attempt to paralyse government activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
