Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi has called for the immediate and safe rescue of prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted while travelling to their orientation camp.

Obi, in a statement, described the incident involving approximately 20 prospective corps members as another indication of what he called worsening insecurity in Nigeria.

He said the young Nigerians were preparing to serve the country but were unable to travel safely on the nation’s roads.

Obi said the incident had also heightened concerns among families about the safety of their loved ones, particularly those travelling between states.

He said protecting lives and property remained the government’s foremost responsibility, adding that insecurity should not be treated as an ordinary occurrence or addressed only after lives had been disrupted.

Obi called for the immediate rescue of all those abducted and the arrest of those responsible.

He said Nigeria should become a country where young people can travel, work and participate in national service without fear.
