Police say they have arrested a fleeing schoolboy who allegedly defiled his 11-year-old female schoolmate at the State Secondary School in Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt.

The incident happened last Friday, with online photos showing the moment the bleeding girl was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Her devastated mother spoke to Nigeria Info from the hospital, calling for justice.

A lawyer who leads Arise for Gender and Livelihood Initiative, Deborah Effiong, also told Nigeria Info that parents, the government, and schools need to sensitize children and adolescents about the consequences of engaging in criminal activities.

The public relations officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko said the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal and Investigation Department.
