The House of Representatives has extended the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act from September 30 to December 31, 2026.
The extension followed an executive request submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu, seeking additional time for ministries, departments and agencies to complete critical infrastructure projects and other capital expenditures captured under the 2025 budget.
The latest extension is the fourth adjustment to the deadline for implementing the capital component of the budget.
The National Assembly initially extended the deadline from December 31, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
It was later extended to June 30 and then September 30, 2026.
The latest amendment now gives government agencies until the end of December to complete the implementation of the capital component.
Lawmakers passed the amendment bill through accelerated consideration during plenary, with the extension aimed at preventing the abandonment of ongoing capital projects because of funding bottlenecks and delays in implementation.
With the approval, ministries, departments and agencies will have until December 31, 2026, to disburse and execute capital allocations under the 2025 budget framework.
The extension is expected to allow more time for ongoing infrastructure and other capital projects captured in the 2025 Appropriation Act to be completed rather than left unimplemented after the previous September 30 deadline.
