Residents of Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State took to the streets Friday to protest recurring attacks, kidnappings and worsening insecurity in the area.
The protesters, drawn from parts of the local government area, called on the Federal and Sokoto State governments to take urgent measures to protect residents and their livelihoods.
They said repeated attacks by armed criminals had created fear among farmers, traders and rural dwellers, limiting access to farms, markets and other economic activities.
The demonstrators demanded the deployment of more security personnel and operational equipment to vulnerable communities, as well as intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence-led operations.
They also called for stronger collaboration among the military, police and other security agencies to track down those responsible for the attacks and restore confidence in affected communities.
The protesters warned that continued insecurity could undermine agricultural production and force residents to abandon their communities and farmlands for safer locations.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that it was aware of the protest and assured residents that security operatives were monitoring the situation.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ahmad Rufai, said the police were taking necessary measures to maintain security and protect lives and property in the affected area.
The protest comes amid continuing security challenges in parts of the North-West, where banditry and kidnapping have disrupted rural communities and economic activities.
