The Rivers State House of Assembly has moved to amend the State Local Government Law Number 5 of 2018, ahead of the end of the tenure of the current council Chairmen in June.

A statement said the lawmakers held a plenary on Monday where the member representing Omuma Constituency, Sylvanus Nwankwo, presented a Local Government Amendment Bill, 2024.

He said the bill seeks to further amend the law and other matters connected to it. The bill passed its first reading.

The House also debated the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Amendment Bill, 2024, after the bill was read a second time.

The sponsor, Tekenari Granville, urged his colleagues to support the bill, which will see Kalabari Girls High School, Buguma, return to the government.

The bill was later committed to the House Committee on Education for further legislative scrutiny.
