The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has begun a nationwide data verification exercise to review Nigeria’s revenue allocation framework for federal, state, and local governments.

The commission said the exercise will update key socio-economic and infrastructure data used to determine revenue-sharing indices, ensuring allocations reflect current realities across the country.

Chairman Mohammed Bello Shehu described the initiative as a “landmark step” to strengthen fiscal federalism and improve national planning.

“Accurate data is the backbone of fairness, equity, and national cohesion,” Shehu said. “This exercise will help build a more transparent and responsive revenue distribution system.”

He said the review will assess indicators including population, landmass, education, healthcare, internally generated revenue, and infrastructure across states and local government areas.

RMAFC said the exercise will cover all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, involving data collection and validation from ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as local authorities.

Stakeholder engagement sessions will also be held nationwide to promote transparency and cooperation with traditional rulers, civil society groups, and community leaders.

The commission said the exercise will support evidence-based policymaking and strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s revenue allocation system.
