Senate Committees Hail Tinubu's Military Pay Raise

The Senate Committees on Defence and Army have commended President Bola Tinubu for approving salary increases for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the move as a boost to troop welfare and military morale.

In separate statements on Tuesday, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Sen. Ahmad Lawan, and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar'Adua, said the salary review reflects the administration's commitment to supporting military personnel.

The new pay structure, which takes effect Sept. 1, provides an 80% salary increase for personnel from private to staff sergeant, 50% for warrant officers to colonels, and 30% for officers above the rank of colonel.

The committees noted that the adjustment would raise the annual military wage bill from 660 billion naira to 924 billion naira, benefiting about 250,000 personnel.

They said the salary increase is expected to improve morale and urged members of the armed forces to reciprocate with greater professionalism, efficiency and unity in carrying out their duties across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
