The Senate has confirmed President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on New Media, as the chairman of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Lauretta Onochie and 12 others were confirmed as NDDC board members following the presentation of a report by the vice chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, Amos Bulus on Tuesday.

The Senate however stepped down the nominations of Dr. Pius Odubu (Edo State) and Engr. Anthony Okanne (Imo State) for not appearing before the Senate Committee on NDDC for screening.

Senator Amos said there was no information from the presidency explaining their absence.

Before her confirmation, some Senators objected to Onochie's nomination, arguing that she is not from an oil-producing community but Rivers East Senator, George Sekibo, said the issue of the place of origin issue was not clearly defined in the act establishing the NDDC.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan charged the newly confirmed board to hit the ground running in their new assignment.

He also requested that copies of the NDDC’s audit reports be made available to the National Assembly.
