Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 with a mandate from the President to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual global gathering.
During the visit, he delivered Tinubu’s National Statement at the UN General Debate, where Nigeria renewed its call for reform of the United Nations Security Council, including permanent African representation.
Shettima also called for fairer global financing, stronger climate support and deeper multilateral cooperation.
At the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, he conveyed Tinubu’s call for African countries to move beyond exporting raw minerals and focus on processing, manufacturing and value addition.
The Vice President also participated in a high-level education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, where he reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to education as an investment in productivity and human capital.
He further supported the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign and met with Nigerians in the Diaspora, highlighting the importance of their investments, expertise and networks to national development.
Other engagements included meetings with the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission and United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
According to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima used the engagements to advance Nigeria’s positions on development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace and security.
