Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, says he will restore petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027.
Speaking on Arise Television, Sowore alleged that Nigeria is still subsidising petrol and the naira despite the government’s claim that the petrol subsidy regime ended in 2023.
He described subsidy as necessary support for vulnerable Nigerians, but argued that the current system disproportionately benefits wealthy individuals and businesses.
“You see what everybody has agreed happened to subsidy, it’s not that subsidy is bad because there’s no country that doesn’t subsidise the poor,” he said.
Sowore also blamed the removal of petrol subsidy for worsening economic hardship and the naira’s decline.
"And you saw what happened immediately you remove subsidy. Your economy tanked, your naira also went down the toilet".
He said his administration would prioritise tackling poverty and food insecurity over economic indicators that, according to him, do not reflect the realities faced by Nigerians.
The AAC candidate further cited a recent Food and Agriculture Organisation report, which he said identified Nigeria among countries facing food shortages in 2026.
