Opposition political parties in Nigeria have alleged a plot to use the courts to nullify the suspension of 27 Rivers State lawmakers suspended by the House of Assembly.

In a live broadcast over the weekend, the National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Peter Ameh, explained that the plot was to secure a court judgment invalidating the lawmakers’ suspension.

He further disclosed that the suspended lawmakers would then sit and begin impeachment proceedings against the Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Ameh alleged that a High Court judge in Abuja has assured the pro-Wike lawmakers that the judgment would be delivered in the shortest possible time.

He reminded the plotters that such an action may endanger Nigeria's democracy since the Rivers State House of Assembly had informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the lawmakers’ defection and suspension.

The CUPP called on President Bola Tinubu to call the embattled lawmakers to order to forestall crises in the oil-rich Rivers State.

The political conflict in Rivers State deepened with the decamping of the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers and the declaration of their seats vacant by the speaker.
