President Bola Tinubu has approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, in a move aimed at improving troop welfare as security personnel continue operations against insurgency, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
The new pay structure will take effect from September 1 and will benefit about 250,000 military personnel, according to a statement by the Presidency.
Under the new arrangement, officers above the rank of colonel, including brigadier generals, major generals, lieutenant generals and generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from the rank of colonel to warrant officer will receive a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from private to staff sergeant will earn an 80 per cent raise.
The Presidency said the review will increase the military’s annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
According to the Presidency, the salary adjustment reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel and strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
President Tinubu commended members of the Armed Forces for their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, assuring them that his administration would continue to prioritise their welfare while investing in modern weapons, equipment and technology to enhance military operations.
He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to providing the military and other security agencies with the resources needed to tackle security threats and protect lives and property across the country.
