Oyo State Governor and Allied People's Movement (APM) presidential candidate Seyi Makinde has said the opposition will not allow electoral malpractice in Nigeria's 2027 general elections, insisting that the outcome must reflect the will of the people.
Makinde spoke on Friday in Bauchi after a closed-door meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, where the two leaders discussed governance, security and the future of the opposition ahead of the next elections.
Warning against any attempt to manipulate the vote, Makinde said, “They must not suppress the will of the people.
"They must not suppress whatever decision they are going to take, and we will ensure that does not happen.”
He added, “We will not allow any electoral malpractice.
"The outcome must reflect the voice of Nigerians.”
The governor acknowledged that opposition politics remains difficult in the current climate but expressed confidence that change is possible.
“Being in opposition, the political environment is very toxic.
"It is the darkest moment,” Makinde said.
“But when the day is about to break, that is the darkest point.”
Speaking on the APM's chances in the 2027 presidential election, Makinde pointed to his own victory in the 2019 Oyo governorship race.
“In Oyo State in 2019, as an opposition party then in the PDP, APC was ruling at the federal level and also at the state level, but we won,” he said.
Makinde also addressed recent security concerns in Oyo State, saying the incidents came after years of relative peace.
He suggested that some of the challenges began shortly after he announced his presidential ambition.
Mohammed described Makinde as a leader whose development projects in Oyo State have attracted national attention and said their meeting also focused on strengthening the APM as an opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
