Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, has appointed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as deputy chairman of his campaign council for the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku announced the appointments Thursday as the ADC unveiled its National Campaign Council and Presidential Campaign Management Committee.
Kashim Ibrahim-Imam was named chairman, while Sen. Austin Akobundu will serve as director-general and campaign manager.
Veteran journalist and publisher Dele Momodu will oversee media and communications, while former Kogi Sen. Dino Melaye will lead contact and mobilisation.
The campaign structure has six operational directorates and 30 directors, with Atiku saying it was designed to promote accountability and avoid unnecessary political appointments.
“This is a structure built for work.
"Every directorate has a duty.
"Every director has an assignment.
"Every appointee must account for results,” Atiku said.
He said the campaign would focus on the cost of living, unemployment, insecurity and declining purchasing power.
El-Rufai’s appointment comes as he faces corruption-related proceedings and remains in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC. He has pleaded not guilty to charges linked to alleged money laundering and conversion of public property.
The former governor had also recently said he may reconsider some relationships after friends and associates remained silent during his legal troubles.
The campaign council is expected to coordinate Atiku’s nationwide activities ahead of the 2027 election.
